Is Your Air Filter Causing Problems?

Does it sound strange that we would call out one component of your air conditioner, when it’s made up of hundreds of other small pieces? Why would your air filter cause more problems than any other component, like the blower motor or the refrigerant line?

Well, an air filter doesn’t cause more problems than any other component. But the reason we’re highlighting this unique piece of equipment in your air conditioner is because you can actually fix it yourself. Yep, you heard that right!

An air filter is one of the only aspects of AC repair in Kalispell, MT that you can try to fix on your own. You might not need any professional help and it all might work out free of charge. And, if you find out that the problem doesn’t have to do with this component, then you can call our team to schedule a service call and we can get to work.

How to Check Your Air Filter

First things first, turn off your air conditioner. It might sound convenient to just keep the system on while you check the air filter, but you’ll be working counterproductively if the system is still trying to run while you inspect it. Turn it off, head to the return air ducts, and take a look at your air filter.

The air filter is a component that sits right where the intake ducts are located. If you were to imagine your air conditioner as a person that was breathing in warm air and breathing out cool air, the intake duct is where the deep breath “in” would be.

There should be an easily accessible flap for you to reach in and pull out the air filter. These components are made as easy to access as possible because they’re supposed to be changed out or cleaned every few months.

Check the filter and if it seems particularly clogged up then either change it out for a new one, or wipe it clean. Check your AC’s manual to see what type of filter this is and how to properly change it. Or, you can call us for help if you need an extra hand.

When the Problem Isn’t Your Air Filter

So, what if you’ve checked your air filter and determined that it’s not the culprit? Isn’t that a bad thing?

Well, not necessarily! You see, the air filter is the most easily accessible component in the system and is basically the only part of your AC that doesn’t require precise training to handle. So, if your air filter isn’t the problem, then there’s an extreme likelihood that your air conditioner requires professional repairs.

Take your air filter as the proverbial canary in the coal mine, just in reverse. If your air filter is fine, but your air conditioner has problems, then it needs to be diagnosed and repaired by a professional.
